Magnum Photographer as President of Jury for URBAN 2024
This year, URBAN Photo Awards is honored to have Magnum photographer Harry Gruyaert as the Jury President. Gruyaert, along with a panel of esteemed industry professionals, including Adam Pretty and Paul Gadd, will meticulously select winners from thousands of submitted images. URBAN has a proud history of hosting legendary photographers as Jury Presidents: Alec Soth, Nino Migliori, Bruce Gilden, Alex Webb, Martin Parr and Tatsuo Suzuki jsut to name a few.
URBAN Photo Awards is an annual event that runs from the beginning of April to the end of June and is celebrated on the last weekend of October through the closing event Trieste Photo Days and the URBAN Award Ceremony. The festival is a gathering of photography enthusiasts from all over the world. The event offers a variety of activities, including workshops, lectures, tours and more, providing an excellent opportunity to meet other photographers, showcase their work and learn more about the art and craft of photography.
Harry Gruyaert
Born in Belgium in 1941, Harry Gruyaert moved to Paris in 1962 to pursue photography. Influenced by Pop Art during a 1968 visit to New York, he began seeing everyday objects differently. In the early 1970s in London, the colors of early TV screens inspired his TV Shots series, now in the Centre Pompidou collection.
Throughout the 1970s, Gruyaert photographed in North Africa, the Middle East, the U.S., Europe, and India, aiming to capture the essence of each place and time. He joined Magnum Photos in 1982 and created notable series like Rivages and East/West. His work has been exhibited widely, including retrospectives in Paris (2015) and Antwerp (2018). Gruyaert’s photos are held in major collections such as the Centre Georges Pompidou.

Awarding Excellence
As President of the Jury, Gruyaert will personally choose the overall Winner of the Single Photos section and crown them with the “Photographer of the Year Award”. It will be announced and awarded (together with the other ranked photographers) during the Award Ceremony of the contest at Museum Revoltella – Saturday 26 October 2024 at Trieste Photo Days.
In an exciting live final battle, Gruyaert will decide the winner of URBAN Photo Arena, the UNDER 35 section of the competition. What’s truly amazing is that he will make his decision on stage, meeting the photographer in person. This live interaction promises to be an electrifying moment, highlighting the unique connection between the jury and the emerging talents in the urban photography world.
