Massimiliano Faralli, Alain Schroeder, Sakulchai Sikitikul and Jonathan Jasberg won URBAN Photo Awards 2022
Italian photographer Massimiliano Faralli with the shot Jurassic Street is the Winner Overall of URBAN Photo Awards 2022, chosen by the president of the jury Nino Migliori among the first ranked in the Streets, People, Spaces and Creative categories in the Single Photos section.
The Winner was unveiled in preview at the URBAN Photo Awards ceremony, Saturday 29 October at the Auditorium of the Museo Revoltella, as part of the Trieste Photo Days 2022 festival.

According to Nino Migliori, Faralli’s photograph is “constructed in such a way as to refer to immediate cinematic themes, therefore able to tell a story in a possible game between fiction and reality.”
The winner of the Projects & Portfolios section is Muay Thai Kids, by Belgian photographer Alain Schroeder, who has already won multiple awards in several editions of URBAN Photo Awards. Schroeder’s project tells the plight of Thailand’s child wrestlers, forced by their families to fight fierce Muay Thai matches to earn some money thanks to betting.
Muay Thai Kids was chosen by Shobha, who appreciated “not only the undoubted quality of the photos but above all the strong denunciation of the exploitation of minors”. Muay Thai Kids exhibition at the Biblioteca statale Stelio Crise is open until 4 November.
Susan Meiselas has instead chosen Life Explore Soul by Thai photographer Sakulchai Sikitikul as the winning project of the URBAN Book Award. “A good book has surprises”, Meiselas writes in the introduction of the volume, “with the framing of a photograph, the relationship between images and the sequences as pages turn. Life Explore Soul invites this level of engagement for a viewer, through its juxtapositions, directing our eyes with multiple focal points, perspective shifts, and mysterious elements.”
American photographer Jonathan Jasberg was crowned Best Author of this thirteenth edition of the contest: a recognition for his talent and the strength of his reportage, in particular Cairo: A Beautiful Thing Is Never Perfect, also awarded as an honorable mention.
Valentina D’Alia, winner of the New Buildings Special Prize with the photo The Bowl, and the authors selected for the prize-exhibitions at the Sartorio Museum (Antonio Bernardino Coelho, Gabriele Galimberti, Roman Robroek and Ulli Mosconi Zupin) and at the Museo di Parenzo (Piero Colle and Anthony Sala).
