Matjaz Tancic

Matjaž Tančič (1982) is lens-based artist working mainly on documentary and independent projects between China and Slovenia. His work explores the lines between documentary, portrait and art photography to engage with social and cultural issues. He likes to experiment within the photographic medium and is best known for his 3D stereography projects. Tančič holds a BA in photography from the University of the Arts, London.

Matjaž’s main projects have been shown in more than 100 solo and group exhibitions including: the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago; Circulations, Paris; Somerset House, London; the Asian Society, Texas; Deck Gallery, Singapore; Lumiere Brothers Gallery, Moscow; Vevey Photo Festival, Switzerland; the Hong Kong Photo Festival; Lianzhou Photo Festival, China; the Venice Architecture Biennale, Italy; Pekin Fine Arts, Hong Kong; Auckland Triennale, New Zealand; and others.
An exhibition of his 3D portrait project focusing on North Korea made him the first foreign photographer to be exhibited in North Korea.

Matjaž has carried out projects for numerous clients and publications such as New York Times, La Times, Bloomberg Businessweek, the Telegraph, the Guardian, Observer, Vice, Dazed and Confused, Der Spiegel, Financial Times, GUP magazine, LObst, Fast Company, Geo, National Geographic, Time, Courier International, Vogue, Marie Claire, Wired and others.

Matjaž has been awarded several prizes, among them first prize at the Sony World Photography Organization contest in the 3D category, three separate first prizes at Slovenia Press Photo awards, finalist at the Google Photography Prize and honourable mentions at IPA, Px3 and Emzin – Slovenian Photography of the Year.

Matjaž has published three photo books with Jiazazhi Press, a top Chinese independent publishing house: Timekeepers in 2014, 3DPRK in 2016 and Wow Taobao in 2020.
3DPRK was listed as one of the top 10 books of 2017 by the Tate art photography curator Simon Baker.
He has attended the Eddie Addams Workshop in New York and artist residencies in New York, Samos – Greece and Bishan, China. He is a member of Inland – international photographers cooperative since 2020.
