Monica Carvalho
I’m Monica Carvalho, a Swiss-Portuguese visual artist based in London, working at the intersection of photography and digital art. I specialise in creating surreal photomontages that blend the familiar with the unexpected—offering viewers a fresh, often playful perspective on everyday life.
Over the years, my work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Museum of Illusions in Seville, and has reached a global audience through online platforms, television, and brand collaborations. In 2017, my art was featured on CBS Miami, bringing my visual storytelling to a new audience. I’ve also had the honour of speaking at an Adobe creative conference in Oslo, where I shared insights into my process and approach to imaginative visual work.
I’ve collaborated with brands such as Apple, Google, Adobe, Nike, and Samsung—creating visual content that merges imagination with storytelling. These partnerships, along with my experience working in museums and galleries, have shaped my understanding of how art connects with people in both digital and physical spaces.
My creative process begins behind the camera, capturing body parts, objects, and natural elements, which I then carefully merge in Photoshop. I pay close attention to colour, lighting, and composition, aiming to create striking visual illusions that invite curiosity and a double take.
Influenced by surrealist and contemporary artists alike—from the clever visual language of René Magritte and the dreamlike worlds of Salvador Dalí, to the poetic minimalism of Chema Madoz and the magical realism of Rob Gonsalves—I strive to turn the ordinary into something extraordinary.
