On June 12th entries to the photo contest URBAN Photo Awards have been closed. The International Photo Contest is promoted by the cultural association dotART of Trieste in collaboration with Photographers.it and with media partnership of Sprea Fotografia.

This eighth edition, which began last February 14, confirmed the growing trend of the competition and proved that URBAN has become an important event and followed by many photographers. In the contest, 4,120 photos and 253 portfolios for 1,015 participants from all over the world. In addition to Italy: Belgium, Canada, Switzerland, Germany, England, India, Mexico, Poland, the United States, South Africa and many more.

The jury of the competition, chaired by Maurizio Galimberti, is already working: shortly Selected photographers will be published and by the end of July the Finalist ones. Winners and Honorable Mentions will be announced in September. The final exhibition with award ceremony will be held in Trieste at the end of October, during the opening of the festival Trieste Photo Days 2017 (TPD 2017), where the jury president Maurizio Galimberti will personally reward the absolute winner of the competition.

This year, URBAN has a prize pool of 6,000 €. Among the various prizes, URBAN Main Partner, the Museum of Poreč Territory (Poreč, Croatia) will display an exhibition for three projects classified in the “Projects & Portfolios” section. The projects will be selected by the curators of the Museum and exhibited from July 31 to August 20, 2017 (period when the tourist count touches 120,000 visitors). The URBAN exhibition will be part of the Kontaminacije/Contaminations program, an annual event dedicated to the intersection between various media (photography, new media, multimedia performances, experimental theater).

Over the next few weeks, the best photos of URBAN 2017 will be selected to become part of a “traveling” exhibition circuit around Europe. Since 2011, URBAN has set up exhibitions in Poland (Krakow and Warsaw), Hungary (Budapest, Pecs and Miskolc), Germany (Berlin), Cyprus (Limassol, Paphos and Nicosia), Latvia (Riga), Slovenia (Koper), Croatia (Poreč), Ukraine (Sumy), Colombia (Bucaramanga) and Italy (Trieste and Rome).

In addition, a selection of single images and projects will compose the third edition of the Urban Unveils volume, which will be presented at TPD in late October. The last edition of the book has met with great criticism.

The jury is composed of Maurizio Galimberti (President of the Jury, photographer and internationally renowned artist for his Polaroid mosaics), Monika Bulaj (photographer, reporter and documentarist), Denis Curti (artistic director of the House of the Three Oci in Venice), Elena Uljančić-Vekić (director of the Museum of Porec, Croatia), Aida Muluneh (Ethiopian photographer and founder of Addis Foto Fest, Africa’s largest photographic festival), Angelo Cucchetto (founder of the Photographers.it portal and artistic director of Trieste Photo Days, the Polish street photographer, Ania Klosek, the Indian natural photographer Rathika Ramsamy, Bob Patterson (Street Photographer Magazine editor), Grzegorz Kosmala (doc! photo magazine editor), Karol Liver (Polish  photographer and director of Prism Magazine), Rohit Vohra (one of the most important Asian photographers, co-founder of APF magazine), Mozart Mesquita (partner of FHOX organizing Fotografar SHOW, Brazil’s largest photographic event), Maja Briski (art critic, independent curator and graphic designer) and Christy Karpinski (founder of F-Stop Magazine – Chicago).
