The British Seen
These images are part of a documentary project I photographed in England and Wales between 1976 and 1978. I wanted to examine the British people in a spontaneous way. As leisure time is a quintessential component of British life, I decided to document weekend events and outings: carnivals, dog shows, village fetes, hoses races. I photographed working class families at villege fetes and vacationing at the seaside as well as the privileged classes at Epson Derby and the Windsor Horse Show. Im interested in people being themselves, not influenced by anyone's preconceived notions, including my own. My objective is to seek out and capture people in unguarded moments that reveal something universal about what it means to be human. It thrills me to capture a meaningful split second of life as it chances to exist.
