The BISHWA IJTEMA, meaning Global Congregation is an annual gathering of Muslims in Tongi, by the banks of the River Turag, in the outskirts of Dhaka, Bangladesh. It is now the largest Islamic congregation at 5 million, easily surpassing the 2nd.largest now being Hajj which was formerly the largest Islamic congregation at 2 – 3 million. It is one of the largest peaceful gatherings in the world. The Ijtema is a prayer meeting spread over three days and in 2 parts (EACH OF THREE DAYS), during which attending devotees perform daily prayers while listening to scholars reciting and explaining verses from QURAN. It culminates in the AKHERI MUNAJAT, or the final prayer. After this prayer it is the time to retreat, everyone begins to return to their respective homes, then only the problem starts, Railways, buses, Boats big & small, everyone starts operation to carry the people to their homes, but the total capacity to transport the millions is insufficient, so every transport vehicle gets overcrowded, their lies the chance of accidents, specifically the trains are covered with passengers on each side. The trains in Bangladesh till date are not operated with electric engines, only diesel engines are used, so there is no overhead electric lines, people easily gets on top of the coaches and ride. From my photographs one can see how the trains look like after the festival is over. I do not know if there is any comparison like this journey in any part of the world.
